I look forward to reading it. I still plan to write my own comment on chapter 2, I've been very busy and also a bit writer's-blocked about it.

No news from the Newsrackblog, and The Talking Dog is silent, so I figured I would try to move the ball forward with my own comment on chapters 1 and 2 of Mr. Wittes' book.

Thomas,

Thank you for undertaking this important discussion. I think that another reason why the discussion is important is that it offers an opportunity to provide a rich context for an important subject, and hopefully you and your readers will take advantage of the strengths of the web to link the discussion to its broader context on the web and in the world.

No, not at all! I did say "so-called long war" above. But even if I firmly believed that our conflict with Al Qaeda/Bin Laden is in fact and ought to be a war, pure and simple, and that it will be a long one, I wouldn't insist on you doing so. -- Still, whether we now approve of it or not, there was a rather overwhelming authorization of military force against Al Qaeda. That may not be the declaration of war that would clinch the argument that we are formally and legally at war, but it seems very close to it.

This seems like a very worthwhile project. Does taking part require that a person buy into the idea that we're involve in a "long war"?

Thomas:

I'm looking forward to working with you on this; it promises to be a most enlightening exercise, and as you noted, concerns a subject whose importance to our lives can simply not be overstated. The very purpose of terrorism is to throw us off our game, to see whether we'll take the bait and alter our behavior to conform to our fear... such as, oh, changing our laws permanently when we might not really need to... in reaction to terrorism. Well... looking forward to it.
