QOTD: Abizaid

Posted by Thomas Nephew on September 18th, 2007

Via an AP report by Robert Burns, remarks by retired general John Abizaid:

There are ways to live with a nuclear Iran,” Abizaid said in remarks at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a think tank. “Let’s face it, we lived with a nuclear Soviet Union, we’ve lived with a nuclear China, and we’re living with (other) nuclear powers as well.”

Abizaid stressed that a nuclear Iran was not inevitable, and that a non-nuclear Iran was preferable. But his reasons for favoring continued efforts to prevent Iran’s development of nuclear weapons are apparently more about wanting to prevent proliferation in the region than because of a direct threat to the United States:

“Iran is not a suicide nation,” he said. “I mean, they may have some people in charge that don’t appear to be rational, but I doubt that the Iranians intend to attack us with a nuclear weapon.”

Thanks be for a sanity marker.
Wesley Clark said something similar months ago, but got jumped on heavily since it accompanied remarks about the party donors who were talking up “keeping the military option on the table.”
And since then, of course, he’s posted his job application for Hillary Clinton’s cabinet, and endorsed her, so I don’t know how much use he’ll be in that regard.

Nice catch. Looks like Abizaid is a NARL (Not A Raving Lunatic)–of course now that he’s retired, he can afford to be.

    Belated responses:
Nell: Don’t know what to say about Wes Clark; that op-ed is an exercise in fence straddling: title, “The Next War”, conclusion, “The best war is the one that doesn’t have to be fought,” in between, “the most likely next conflict will be with Iran.” I’d kind of avoided looking at it closely, now I remember why.
Tom: Thanks for the “nice catch”. But that was sure one garbled way for me to put it: “But his reasons for favoring continued efforts to prevent Iran’s development of nuclear weapons are apparently more about wanting to prevent proliferation in the region than because of a direct threat to the United States”… jeez louise. I do my worst writing after midnight. Unfortunately, that’s also when I do most of my writing.
